Why Stress Management Training Is Needed At Every Workplace

The Biggest Reason of Stress

They say there’s no such thing as a job with zero stress. Well, we’ll have to agree. But so is the case with just about any other thing in life. According to HSE (Health & safety Executive, UK), the biggest reason for stress, depression and anxiety among the people of the United Kingdom is workload at their jobs. 44% of those surveyed about the causes of stress described their work as the reason of their mental discomfort. Check out more prominent reasons here.

We’re clear on one thing: among the most commonplace causes for stress are work-related issues.  An in-depth study further reveals that those involved in human health and social services face this problem the most.

But, it’s nice to know…

It is not impossible to escape the ghost of depression, stress and anxiety, although it might seem inescapable if you’re going through a stressful phase right now. But sometimes, moderate amounts of stress can actually be productive. In fact, a new study by the University of California, Berkeley, reveals that moderate levels of stress that do not last long are often helpful since they help motivate employees to deliver optimal results. Below is a graphical representation of stress vs. performance.

But what is crucial to keep in mind is that after a certain point, stress needs to be managed in order to maximize output and maintain healthy, happy minds. We’ll explain you how you could cope with it in a while.

Who Should Be Concerned?

It is absolutely out of question to ask whether one should be concerned about him/herself if he/she is dealing with stress. Another thing that is more critical is how much should the employing institutions care? After all, we have clear evidence about work being a principle reason for a disturbed mental health.

Billions of pounds turned to dust!

For those who might not know this, stress can cost more to the economy than you can imagine. The inability to deal with mental health issues among employees in the UK has cost the country £5 billion a year, which would continue to grow if we do not deal with the root cause.

Employers deal with it too.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) conducted a global survey, which showed that 66% of all those who took part in the survey missed deadlines, made general work errors and were tardy due to stress-related issues. Moreover, a Labour Force Survey (LFS) conducted in 2015/2016 revealed that 34% of all working days were missed due to work-related stress. And that was just money we were talking about. You would find the effects of workplace stress on human beings on an individual level rather hard to believe.

The numbers are shocking

What is more atrocious than the damage to economy is the number of deteriorating human lives due to the demon called stress. One report published in 2012 suggests that stress cost around 160 million lost holidays per year to employees at their workplaces in the UK. Additionally, according to a survey published by independent.co.uk, one-third of the people in the United Kingdom have had suicidal thoughts at some point in their lives.

And that is not it.

A research conducted at the Glasgow University said that 1 person in every 9 people in Scotland, who fall in the youth category (18 to 34), have attempted suicide.

In essence, here are the top reasons why you need to care about stress management direly:

  • It has a negative impact on both, the employee and the employer.
  • Research reveals stress at work may have a disastrous effect on the country’s economy.
  • It can result in employee burnout, which would decrease productivity and slow down company growth.
  • If not tackled with, the problem may result in prevalent depression and other more frightful mental health issues among the youth.

The appalling numbers of stress victims that keep rising with each passing year call for some immediate action on an individual level, from the state and from the employers.

How to Cope with Stress

The best way to go about it is to take care of yourself first. We’ve listed some small changes that you can bring in your daily routine to help you cope with stress.

  • Take a break from all technology that surrounds you. Try to ditch your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram every once in a while. Knowing too much that is not necessary may add up to your reasons for sadness.
  • Try to breathe some fresh air as much as you can. Take a jog, a walk or even try inducing exercise in your routine gradually.
  • Focus more on the long-term benefits than short-term outcomes. This would help keeping you focused and hence away from worry.
  • Manage your eating and sleeping habits. Unhealthy routines can bring about symptoms of depression and general sadness.
  • Find a coping system: talk to someone you trust, write down what you feel or even talk to yourself if that is your way to relieve all negative energy.
  • Try taking out time for doing things you enjoy. For example painting, reading a book, going fishing, etc. Do anything that helps you think positively.
  • Get yourself checked for nutrient deficiencies. A lack of Magnesium, Iron, Vitamin B6, to name a few, in your body can make you feel low and cause lethargy.

That being said, we also understand that it could sometimes be hard to deal with depression on your own, especially during times of inflation, financial pressures and increasing responsibilities.
