Course Overview

This Children and Young People’s Mental Health course explores a range of critical topics related to mental health conditions affecting children and young people, along with the various ways they can receive support. This course begins by defining mental illness and mental health problems, examining their impact on young individuals. It provides extensive coverage of various mental health conditions, detailing how they can be recognised, diagnosed, and treated. Key topics include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, self-harm, and eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Additionally, the course addresses other mental health conditions, including schizophrenia, autism, learning difficulties, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, panic disorder, sleep apnoea, and social phobia.

You will explore the symptoms, causes, and risk factors of these conditions, as well as the appropriate actions to take if you suspect a child or young person is struggling with their mental health. The role of mental health professionals is also discussed, covering the contributions of psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and clinical social workers. The course highlights how parents and caregivers can actively participate in their child’s mental health journey. Various treatment approaches are examined, including psychotherapy, mindfulness, play therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and medication.

Additionally, the course explores prognosis and prevention strategies, offering insights into how to promote positive mental health and challenge common misconceptions surrounding mental illnesses. Furthermore, you will gain practical techniques to help initiate and navigate conversations with children and young people about their mental health, creating open communication and support.
