There is a big difference between a career and a job. Essentially, a job is something that you do because you are looking to make a steady income. A career too will, at its core, bring you a steady income but at the same time, it is also based on something that you are impassioned about and would like to keep doing for the rest of your life. A really good career choice is one where you are happy and satisfied no matter what challenges come along on your way. Therefore needless to say, choosing a career is very important. Here’s what you can do and the factors that you can consider when you are thinking about choosing a career.
What is it that you absolutely love doing?
One great piece of career advise that you can really make use of when you think about what livelihood you want to take up, is picking something that you are actually impassioned to do. Don’t ever start working or choosing a career for the money. The moment that you pick a career based on how much money it will pay you alone, you make it a job. Instead think about what kind of work you will genuinely be interested in doing day after day without feeling tired of it. You see, if you do what you love to do, they say you will never work another day in your life. Pick a career that makes your life feel like it’s one big holiday where you get to do what you really want to do.
But, you also need to make the right choice
How to decide on a career that is right for me?
If you are thinking about how you can decide on a career that is right for you, in addition to what we discussed above, you also need to consider the practicality of you choosing a particular career path. For example, you need to think if you have the educational or the professional qualifications needed to be successful in that career and if you do not, you should think if there would be a possibility of you acquiring those. Next you need to also think about the demand for that particular career path in your country or if you are planning to migrate, you should consider whether or not your chosen career path has enough demand where you are going to be moving to. This will ensure that you don’t get depressed and exhausted sometime down the line because the career that you picked is not one that has much scope in the country that you are living or where you are planning to move to.
Now, what if you already have a career but is unhappy with it?
You’d be surprised how many people would simply live through a career that they know is not right for them or that they are genuinely unhappy about.
Why do people do that?
Because it’s all about the comfort zone!!!
You get yourself a job, then start working in it and you get a secure pay cheque at the end of each month which pays all your bills. Apart from that security though, every other aspect of your work is disinteresting and monotonous to you and you really don’t like the people that you share your work space with. But leaving your current job or trying to find a new one is a big risk to you in your mind. It is a risk that is bigger than sitting day after day in the same job that you will slowly but surely begin to hate. You also completely forget about trying to start something for yourself, like a business idea that is at the back of your mind.
Because its too risky. There is no guarantee that your hard work will give you equal results in business and you are not sure whether you will still be able to pay your bills each month.
So what do you do?
You retreat to the comfiest corner of your comfort zone and stay there disheartened that you are in this position and that you have no choice.
But, success begins where your comfort zone ends
As long as you don’t take a risk you will have gained nothing. As long as you refuse to hope there will be no more possibilities. Choosing a career does not have to be something that is scary and risky all the time. You can easily take a career path test to see what type of careers would suit you the best given your skills and your qualifications and if there is anything more you need to be involved in a specific career, you can definitely work towards it. The only person that is holding you back, is you.
Always dream big
They say that if you reach for the moon you probably will get a star or two and definitely nothing less. That is what you need to think of when you feel like you need help finding a career. Start networking and start asking for advise from people with experience. Think about the areas that you would like to learn and also look for career paths that have enough scope for progress in them. Think about the big picture; where would you like to see yourself 5 or 10 years from now?
What is the best career for me?
Honestly, only you know the answer to that question, and really, you know it in your heart. You are just too uncertain to put it into action. But as a first step, you can start researching to find out what you can learn and what skills you can gain to start a career of interest. The right skills and qualifications will do you more help than you can imagine!!!
